Faecal Microbial Analysis

FMA is a deeper investigation of the microflora of the intestinal tract, which is collected from a faecal sample. Bioscreen culture, identify and quantify faecal bacteria, including aerobes, anaerobes, and yeasts using MALDI-TOF technology. These are reported against reference ranges. Unlike standard stool pathology, the primary function of the FMA is to provide quantitative and qualitative data of microbial flora to indicate if there is an imbalance of the intestinal ecosystem of any individual.

Due to the vast diversity in faecal microbiota, Bioscreen focus on assessing a number of selected key microorganisms as an indication of gastrointestinal tract health. These organisms include aerobic bacteria (E.coli, non-E.coli coliforms, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, and. Streptococcus spp.), anaerobic bacteria (Bacteroides, Eubacterium, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Clostridium, Prevotella and Porphyromonas, Peptostreptococcus spp.), and yeasts, (Candida spp.,). Further aerobic and anaerobic species will be routinely reported if in overgrowth.
